What is MBSR?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was developed in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Since then, it has become a widely studied, evidence-based program to enhance health and well-being. Participants practice methods to enhance the ability to connect with one’s present moment experience through the practices of sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful stretching, body scan meditation, mindful eating, and mindful communication exercises.

What is entailed in the program?

Enrolling in MBSR means that you are ready to live your life in a more intentional, mindful, way. The class meets for 2 hours per week for 8 weeks. There is one double session for 4 hours of silent practice. The course requires that participants bring mindfulness techniques into their daily lives even outside of class. Practicing mindfulness techniques is encouraged for approximately 45 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week. This can be easily facilitated by the mindfulness CD’s which will be provided in the beginning of the class.

What is the double session about?

The double session is a chance to deepen your mindfulness practice. The 4-hour session can be thought of as a silent “mini-retreat”, with opportunity to reflect on your experience.

    • 7 (two-hour) classes
    • One double class (4 hours) for extended practice
